In The Heart of the Home, I wrote that one thing a designer can do to gain easy advantage is to visit other showrooms. Most designers don’t.
It’s not just about borrowing ideas. It’s also about being able to speak with authority about competitors and their product. I’ve heard people just making it up instead, and even if we feel okay doing that, it risks exposing us as liars.
I don’t agree with wasting designers’ time with pretend appointments and the like, but I do very much approve of looking around. I welcome it, too; I like talking to other designers.
