My pillbox visits for some time have been toward writing a book about them. But last week I stayed in Blanes near Barcelona, and found myself under what seems to be the only pillbox in the area. According to El Pais, Franco built about 6,000 of these along the French border, many – like this one – incorporating caves or tunnels.
This one has two parts, only one recorded by something called monumentalnet.org, connected by a tunnel. The pathway to it has collapsed, and given the dry, sandy state of the soil, I decided not to explore the tunnel. I was able to hang onto enough vegetation to get to one entrance and close to the other, which has had a door-frame fitted at some time.
